Kitchen Cabinet Painting Process
What we do:
1. Remove Doors, Drawers & Hardware
Take off:
- Cabinet doors
- Drawer fronts
- Hinges
- Handles/knobs
- Label everything carefully
2. Liquid Sand the Surfaces
Purpose:
- Remove sheen
- Create adhesion
- Degreases
3. Apply Insl-X Stix Waterborne Bonding Primer (made by Benjamin Moore) – a premium acrylic-urethane primer designed to grip onto the most challenging and slick surface. This primer provides an anchor for new paint on laminated or previously varnished cabinets.
4. Apply Paint
Application methods:
- Sprayer for smoothest finish
- on doors and drawer faces
- Brush + roller for frames and kick plates
Typical process:
- 2 finish coats minimum
- Light sanding between coats
4. Rehang Doors Reinstall and Drawer Faces
- Using existing hinges (or replacing with new hinges)
- Reuse or Replace hardware (handles/pulls)
5. Cure Properly
Paint dries before it cures.
Typical cure times:
- Touch dry: hours
- Usable: few days
- Full cure:4 weeks
Typical Timeline
Small kitchen:
- Prep: 2 days
- Priming: 1 day
- Painting: 2+ days
- Reassembly: 1 day
- Cure: several weeks
